toronto turned into one of the many movies that are filmed in our beautiful city, the city once dubbed by Selassie I as “the meeting place” turned into the most uncomfortable police state. definitely one of the most unforgettable summer events. i could say more but i am sure the story has been told already aaaaaannnnddd i just woke up….but stay awake to what abstract random are doing, along with ayo leilani….pay close attention.

shabazz palaces
based out of seattle, this anomoly of a project surfaces. far from anything rock related, its headed by ishmael butler aka butterfly (of digable planets) and less notably, a project called cherrywine. i heard about this through leilani (of 88 days) by way of THEESatisfaction an ill group out of seattle as well, who had done some shows with shabazz palaces .
at this point i am not sure if its a collaborative project or a solo one under the psuedonym but either way its one of the best hip-hop projects i have ever heard. firstly cus its just bizarre and dark but really mellow in terms of the delivery of everything! as i read in one summation of it, it seems to run parallel with the likes of mf dooms career, minus the relentless releases. where daniel dumile became zev love x in the group kmd with his brother but once his brother passed coupled with the shady music industry he re-emerged as mf doom: concealing his identity with a mask and exercising his will to create chaotic stream of conciousness narrative songs.
and thats just what you get with shabazz palaces, interestingly wovened pieces of music that may upset you if you like to listen to the radio. i just got it off itunes and have been listening to it non stop all week and there is just something very magnetic about the whole thing. plus its nice to see that a grammy award emcee who is quite notable in the world of so called urban music is not using his name to create a fan base for the music. more than likely because his music since the debut album went from being some what beatnik hippy native tongue style to militant and quite sarcastic due to seeing the side of the entertainment industry most of us are not privy to…or perhaps would never believe.
so last year june and july two eps were released: a self titled one and a follow up dubbed, ‘of light’. both 7 tracks long you find anything from hard bombastic styled beats to tribal chanted samples literally full of bells and awkward pauses and chants.
so if you are into exploring new terretories this is my suggestion. have a look at the website: www.shabazzpalaces.com or just google them like i did and come across a wealth of info pertaining to this project. even check youtube for the video ‘belhaven meridian’ which features the song ‘a mess…’
